Chelsea To Play Herself During “Lies” Tour, Her Sister on NBC Sitcom

It’s not every day that someone’s life is the basis of a television show. Nonetheless, that’s what happening to Chelsea Handler. NBC is turning “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea,”—a book based on Handler’s life—into a sitcom.

What’s even more unusual is producers have cast Handler. She’s been cast not to play herself but to play her older sister. That’s got to be worth a few hours on the psychiatrist’s couch.

Laura Prepon, of “That 70’s Show” fame, has been tapped to play Handler, more specially, Chelsea Hanson—an unabashed, licentious, alcoholic cocktail waitress. Apparently, NBC doesn’t realize that that’s the same character Kathy Bates plays on “Harry’s Law.”

“I’m from Jersey,” explains Prepon. “Chelsea and I are similar, so it’s perfect we play sisters. It’s funny, because her vodka is my favorite vodka too. We both drink the same thing!”

Enjoying the same beverage is the criteria I always use for selecting kith and kin.

Before you get too excited, or before you get too disappointed, the sitcom still has a long way to go before it reaches NBC’s illustrious airways. It first has to be filmed and then it has to be picked up by the network. In other words, we may never see Prepon play Handler and Handler play her own sister.

In the meantime, as the world waits with bated breath to see the pretend-Handler on the Peacock Network, the real Handler will treat fans to a brand new round of live shows.

To support the release of her latest book, “Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me,” the sardonic comedienne will launch a spring tour of the United States.

The E! Diva’s comedy trek begins May 10 in Boston, Massachusetts at the Agganis Arena. It wraps June 25 in Seattle, Washington at the famed Paramount Theatre.

In total, there are 19-dates on Handler’s itinerary. Most stops are single-performances but her May 21 appearance at the Beacon Theatre in New York City has her performing two sets (7pm and 10:30pm).

If your city hasn’t been routed, or Chelsea Handler tickets are sold out in your market, don’t worry. For her 2010 expedition, “The Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang Tour,” the schedule was expanded three. Expect something similar to happen to her “Lies Tour.”

Also expect to see “Chelsea Lately” regulars Josh Wolf, Heather McDonald, and Brad Wollack. The trio is scheduled to appear throughout Handler’s comedy tour.

“Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me” features stories about Handler as told by her family and friends. The tome hits bookstore shelves May 10.
