Sade: Solo Artist or Band? Regardless, Sade Announces World Tour For 2011

Is Sade a solo artist or a band?

“Sade has announced plans to embark on HER first European tour in 17 years.”The Press Association

“Ten years out of the spotlight didn’t put a damper on Sade’s shine, as the runaway success of HER latest LP, Soldier of Love, proves.”MTV.com

“Sade has confirmed a string of U.S. tour dates behind HER new album Soldier of Love.”RTT News

Now, the first line of the biography section from Sade.com reads, “Soldier of Love is only the sixth studio album the band Sade have released during their 25 year career, and the first since Lovers Rock in 2000.”

Sade is a band.

As someone who remembers Sade’s debut album, Diamond Life, and their first top ten hit, “Smooth Operator,” this comes as quite a shock. Land of Punt has always operated under the assumption that Sade was a beautiful, exotic songstress with a sultry voice.

It turns out LOP was wrong.

Land of Punt wasn’t that far off though. The band Sade is fronted by a beautiful, exotic songstress with a sultry voice who just happens to be the group’s namesake, Sade Adu (her real name is Helen Folasade Adu).

LOP hopes you’ll forgive our error. After all, it was an easy mistake to make. Sade Adu is the only member of the band that’s ever marketed. Her face is the only face you’ll see on the band’s website and album covers (not that we’re complaining).

Sade Adu is not only the band’s identity she’s also the band’s principal songwriter. Yes, she’s pretty much THE band.

You may think it’s a difference without a distinction, but “Sade” is technically a band.

For the record, the other members of Sade are Stuart Colin Matthewman (guitar), Paul Spencer Denman (bass), and Andrew Hale (keyboards).

Next year, Sade launches their first world tour in nearly a decade. Reportedly, Sade will play 50 dates although only three dates in the U.K. and nine dates in North America have been announced (i.e. listed on the band’s website).

Several media outlets are reporting an additional U.S. date. This tenth show is scheduled for Aug. 5 in Chicago, Illinois at the United Center.

Sade’s North American leg kicks off June 16 in Baltimore, Maryland and concludes Aug. 30 in Anaheim, California.

Judging from the amount of empty dates, and the fact that Sade has yet to route cities like New York City, Washington D.C., Miami, Phoenix, Dallas, and Las Vegas, it’s safe to say more tour stops are on the way.

As their itinerary now stands, the band’s big shows include a Sade concert in Toronto on June 28 at the Air Canada Centre and a Sade show in Boston on July 6 at TD Garden.

Sade tickets for their U.S. shows go on sale either Oct. 16 or 18.

While on tour, Sade will be performing their classic hits (“Smooth Operator,” “The Sweetest Taboo,” “No Ordinary Love”) as well as tracks from their latest album, Soldier of Love.

Their sixth studio album dropped Feb. 9 in United States and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. It was the first time a Sade album ever premiered in the top spot.

As for why the band went a decade between albums five and six, Sade Adu explains, “I only make records when I feel I have something to say. I’m not interested in releasing music just for the sake of selling something. Sade is not a brand.”

Doesn’t sound like “Sade” is much of a band either—there’s a lot of “i’s” in that statement, Adu.

By the way, Billboard, Breakingnews.ie, Stereoboard.com, and Rolling Stone Magazine correctly identified Sade as a band.
