Fela! Leads 2010 Tony Award Nominations With 11

The 2010 Tony Awards were announce May 4, 2010 and the musical Fela! led the charge with 11 nominations including one for Best Musical.

The other three nominations for Best Musical were Memphis, American Idiot, and Million Dollar Quartet.

Memphis was the second most recognized new production, it received eight nominations. It was followed by John Logan’s Red, the play about artist Mark Rothko received seven nominations including one for Best Play.

A slight shocker, the play Enron received four nominations but was omitted from the Best Play race.

August Wilson’s Fences, starring Denzel Washington, received 10 nominations including Best Rival of a Play. Le Cage aux Folles, featuring Kelsey Grammar, picked up 11 nominations including Best Revival of a Musical.

Both Washington and Grammer were nominated for best actor in their respective categories.

They weren’t the only famous movie/television actors to pick up nominations: Scarlett Johnansson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sean Hayes, Valerie Harper, Linda Lavin, and Laura Linney were all honored this year.

The Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play is brimming with big time talent. Besides Washington, the category also features Jude Law, Alfred Molina, Liev Schreiber, and Christopher Walken.

Angela Lansbury will have a chance to move pass Julie Harris and become the Tony Awards only six time winner. Lansbury was nominated for her role in the revival of Stephen Sondeim’s A Little Night Music.

Last year, Lansbury won her fifth Tony for playing Madame Arcati in Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit.

The 64th Annual Tony Awards will be held June 13 at Radio City Music Hall and broadcasted on CBS. No word yet on a host.
