Glee Songs For April 20, Season 1 Episode 15 ‘The Power Of Madonna’ (VIDEO)

On April 20, 2010, television’s best musical dramedy, Glee, celebrate the music and the culture impact of the Material Girl with an episode called the “The Power Of Madonna.”

The 15th episode of season one featured 11 songs from Madge’s catalog, nine of which were actually performed by the Glee cast (the remaining two songs were used as background music).

The musical choices were very interesting. Madonna is arguably the most influential female entertainer of the 20th century and one of pop music’s all-time biggest stars.

She reinvented fame.

Yet, included within the batch of songs were “4 Minutes” and “What It Feels Like For A Girl.”

That’s like Glee using the music of The Beatles and performing “Mr. Moonlight” and “Revolution 9;” Or using the music of The Rolling Stones and performing “Harlem Shuffle” and “One Hit (To the Body);” or using the music of Sting and using the music of Sting.

The episode felt a little forced as Sue Sylvester’s affinity towards Madonna seemed to come from nowhere. So did the inclusion of the “Vogue” (video was previewed the week prior) and the “4 Minutes” number.

However, it was one of the funnier Glee episodes. Land of Punt had to rewind the DVR several times to hear what LOP missed while laughing. Sylvester had several good zingers directed at Schuester’s hair.

We enjoyed the mash-up of “Borderline and Open Your Heart.” As Rachel and Finn sang their way through the hallowed halls of William McKinley High School, their fellow students were in the background dressed like Madonna in one of her various looks. It was quite amusing.

We continue to enjoy Cory Monteith’s performances more and more. He is continually improving as a singer even if his dancing is still a bit stiff.

The “Like a Virgin” number sounded fine but LOP was uncomfortable watching Rachel getting it on with Jesse St. James. We know Lea Michelle is 23-years old in real-life but it still made LOP squirm.

Once again Santana and Brittany had speaking parts, which is good, but there wasn’t enough Puck.

Land of Punt understands this episode was created as an advert to sell the Glee: The Music – The Power of Madonna EP. If you consider the circumstances then the show was adequate.

If you don’t consider the circumstances then it was a below average Glee with a several of funny lines.

The Power of Madonna was seen by nearly 13 million people.
