Bonnaroo, Coachella, SXSW Lead List of Top Music Festivals in 2010

Music festivals. They have cool names, great lineups, and are generally longer than your last romantic relationship. Yet, they’re also expensive, exhausting, and go on way to long. Nonetheless, these musical fĂȘtes draw tens of thousands of fans and pump millions of dollars into the local economy.

Below are five of the best annual arts and music festivals the United States has to offer. Obviously this isn’t a comprehensive list as there are dozens of yearly galas held all over the country. However, these five events definitely deserve extra attention and are generally deserving of your hard earned money.

Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival
When: June 10-13, 2010
Where: Manchester, Tennessee
This four-day festival takes place on a 700-acre farm in Tennessee. The event books top musical artists from a wide range of genres including rock, jazz, hip-hop and electronica. Besides the great music, Bonnaroo also hosts a 100-acre entertainment village. This 24-hour venue features several attractions including a cinema, a comedy club, and a beer festival.

Bumbershoot Festival
When: Sept. 4-6, 2010
Where: Seattle, Washington
Bumbershoot is the North America’s largest urban arts festival attracting over 150,000 visitors. The shindig attracts the best names in music, film, comedy, dance, theatre, and spoken word. It’s held at the famous 74-acre Seattle Center (the place with the Space Needle). And yes, you should bring your umbrella (or as the British say, “bumbershoot”).

Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival
When: April 16-18
Where: Indio, California
Perhaps the most famous music festival on this list, Coachella (as the kids like to call it) is a three-day long musical extravaganza. The 2010 festival is headlined by Jay-Z, Muse, and the Gorillaz. By the way, it’s okay to bring a non-professional digital camera onto the grounds but instruments, flags, and stuffed animals are prohibited. Remember that this festival is set in a desert where the days are hot and the nights are chilly. So dress accordingly.

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
When: March 2-21, 2010
Where: Houston, Texas
Okay, this isn’t really a festival but more of a livestock show and rodeo thus the name Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. It’s included on this list because rodeos are fun, the food is fantastic, and the event draws the biggest names in popular music. In 2010, look for Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, and Brooks and Dunn.

SXSW Music and Media Conference
When: March 12-21
Where: Austin, Texas
SXSW is actually several festivals (interactive, film, and music) that run relatively independently but concurrently. SXSW is one of the largest music festivals in the U.S. with more than 1,400 performers taking the stage in more than 80 venues. The music festival has been around since 1987. The film and interactive media stuff was added in 1994.
