George Jones Wants A New Name For Country Music

George Jones wants a new name for country music.

Not for the entire genre, just the kind of music performed by the likes of Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift.

“They had to use something that was established already, and that’s traditional country music. So what they need to do really, I think, is find their own title, because they’re definitely not traditional country music,” Jones said.

The 78-year-old made those remarks during a recent interview when asked about the likes of Underwood and Swift.

“It’s good to know that we still do traditional country music. Alan Jackson still does it, so does George Strait. We still have it, and there’s quite a few of us that are going to hope that it comes back one of these days.”

Jones even went so far as to say artists like Underwood and Swfit have “stolen our identity.”

It’s understandable that Jones would desire a new appellation for the so called new country music. Like we always say, music is identity. People use music to define themselves. However, any new nomenclature applied to a sub-genre of country music would be problematic.

It’s easy to re-labeled Underwood and Swift and keep them separate from Strait and Jackson. But music is seldom black and white. The groups in between the aforementioned artists comprise a large gray area. For instance what category would be used to classify Lyle Lovett ?

Where does this new country music begin and where does it end? And who decides what’s traditional country and what’s not? George Jones?

Let’s assume Jones has been given the authority to seperate country music into two groups, traditional country music and the type of country music performed by Underwood and Swift.

This new sub-genre is going to need a name. A name that has a zing to it, something more dynamic than “new country music.”

With that in mind, Land of Punt has complied a list of several viable options that Mr. Jones can use to call this new brand of country music championed by Underwood and Swift.
