Glee Songs For November 11, Season 1 Episode 9 ‘Wheels’

We’ve been waiting for this moment since we first heard Glee was hitting the airways. Wednesday night, it finally happened. “Defying Gravity” was performed on Glee.

The good news, “Defying Gravity” was sung by Rachel. The bad news, “Defying Gravity” was also sung by Kurt. It was duet.

Land of Punt enjoys Kurt as a character but Rachel was born to sing “Defying Gravity.” We desperately wanted to hear her sing the entire song. Rachel is such a powerful singer and “Defying Gravity” is one of Broadway’s most indelible show-stoppers. LOP laments what could have been.

The “Wicked” song reared its head in Glee’s first ever Diva-off between Rachel and Kurt.

The show’s first number was “Dancing With Myself.” It was Artie’s first solo. The song was arranged with a jazz feel. If you ask Land of Punt, Glee’s version is better than the original.

Glee was on hiatus for two weeks due to the World Series. There’s always the fear that when a show returns from an extended break it loses some of its energy, some of its √©lan.

“Dancing With Myself” was very early in the program (so early credits were rolling over it) but two bars into the song LOP knew Glee hadn’t lost a thing.

In fact, the episode, titled “Wheels,” was probably the best Glee offering to date. The stories and the characters were superb. The themes the episode explored extremely powerful.

The Quinn-Finn-Puck triangle is straight out of Shakespeare. The interaction between Kurt and his father, who is dealing with his son’s homosexuality, was both tender and wistful. Artie and Sue Sylvester’s approach to what it means to be disabled is just not seen on television.

The reason Glee is such a good show is because even if you stripped away the music and the dancing, you would still have a top-notch drama.

“Wheels” concluded with a rousing rendition of “Proud Mary.” The entire Glee club performed the number in wheel chairs. Artie, Mercedes and Tina handled the bulk of the vocals.

Apparently the number was quite harrowing. There were several crashes and spills during filming.

The 67th Golden Globe Awards, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will be broadcasted on NBC on Jan. 17.

In other Glee news, Cory Monteith (Finn) used his twitter account to promote a YouTube video of Manny Garcia, a burgeoning San Francisco-based singer. Garcia did a mash-up of “True Colors” and “Defying Gravity.” Monetith sent a tweet to his 75,000 followers with the word “props” attached to the video’s link. At press time, Garcia’s YouTube video had nearly 25,000 views and scores of positive comments.
