Shrek The Musical Will End Run On January 3 (VIDEO)

Shrek The Musical will end its run at the Broadway Theatre on January 3.

The musical, based on the William Steig’s book Shrek! as well as the eponymous movie, opened Dec. 14, 2008. When it’s all said and done, Shrek will have played 37 previews and 441 performances.

Shrek stars Brian d’Arcy James, Sutton Foster, and Christopher Sieber. Ben Crawford will replace James, who plays Shrek, starting Nov. 10, 2009.

The show was nominated for 8 Tonys including noms for James, Foster and Sieber. The only award it won was for Best Costume Design of a Musical (Tim Hatley).

While it’s sad to see this fun and funny musical go away, a national tour is scheduled to launch July 13 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago.

The show was directed by Jason Moore. The music was written by Jeanine Tesori with book and lyrics David Lindsay-Abaire.

The play runs about two and half hours and has one intermission.
