Spice Girls The Musical In Development

A Spice Girls musical is currently in development. The project would bring the story of the all-female British quintet to the stage.

Here it comes, and before it does, allow Land of Punt to write we’re not proud:

Yo, I’ll tell you what I don’t want, what I really really don’t want,
So tell me what you don’t want, what you really really don’t want,
I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna… Spice Girls musical

That bit was more obvious than the who-did-it from any CSI:Miami episodes and thank our fortunate stars we had to research those lyrics.

Actually, a Spice Girls musical is a brilliant idea. Despite being pure bubble gum pop, Spice music is one of life’s guilty sonic pleasure and tailor made for the stage. Spice Girls is why they invented jukebox musicals in the first place and an infinitely better idea than Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark.

According to the Daily Mirror, Geri Halliwell is working with a cadre of producers to bring the story of the 1990’s English pop group to the stage. The idea, which is now in zygote, is to cast five unknowns to play the now forgotten Spice grandmothers.

The score might include Spice Girls classics like “Wannabe,” “Say You’ll Be There” and “Spice Up Your Life.” That is if they decide to actually use Spice Girls music.

We’re thinking the show be something like Jersey Boys only with less testosterone and more spandex.

Obviously, anything they come up with would first open in London’s West End before debuting on Broadway. LOP’s estimates a world premiere in spring of 2011 with a Broadway debut that fall?

The Spice Girls are the most successful girl group of all time with over 65 million records sold. Formed in 1994, they were the most successful musical act since The Beatles.
