Hughes is best known for his films The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

Teens in the 1980’s recited his movies ad nauseam. For most, his movies, especially the Breakfast Club, were played so many times they wore out the VCR.

While some filmmakers rely on explosions, technology and crass language to tell a story, Hughes was able to relate to audiences with believable characters and genuine emotion even if the situations were completely far-fetched.

His movies had a simple and accessible quality that also made them suitable to tackle the complexities of humanity. Not only that but they were funny.

The stories Hughes told took actual talent and they would have translated into any medium.

Land of Punt’s favorite JH flick is Weird Science. Sure some of that has to do with Kelly LeBrock, but LOP liked the theme song (by Oingo Boingo) and the movie also contained General Public’s “Tenderness.”

Hughes was born in Michigan in 1950 and most of his movies were set in the Chicago. He’s survived by his wife Nancy (they were married for 39 years) and two sons, John and James.
