A-Team Movie Begins Casting

Liam Neeson may play John “Hannibal” Smith in movie adaptation of The A-Team (odd to hear adaptation and The A-team in the same sentence). Meanwhile, Bradley Cooperr may portray the group’s dashing leading man, Templeton “Faceman” Peck (although Land of Punt can’t help but wonder if this just isn’t a ruse to get Cooper and therefore his movie The Hangover more publicity).

The last two members of the A-Team, and the best two characters if you ask LOP, B. Howling Mad” Murdock (originally played by Dwight Schultz, who was also Barclay on Star Trek: The Next Generation) and B.A. Baracus (role played by Mr. T), have yet to be cast.

Fans, critics and pundits have already started to speculate about the actors they’d like to see complete the foursome. Jim Carrey seems like a natural for Murdock, while everyone from Ice Cube to Chewitel Ejiofor has been suggested for the role of B.A.

Land of Punt would actually like to see Bradley Cooper replaced with NCIS’s Michael Weatherly. Weatherly has everything Cooper has, plus he bears a striking resemblance to the original Face, Dirk Benedict (who also played Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica). Although Neeson is awesome, we would have cast Ben Stiller as Hannibal.

Our choices for Murdock and Baracus, respectively, would be Will Ferrell and Mo’Nique. Another suggestion to play Murdock, Sacha Baron Cohen. The role of Murdock is probably the best of the four because the character is constantly straddling the line between sanity and madness.

The A-Team was a one-hour show that aired on NBC from 1983 to 1986, running 98 episodes. Although the show was very violent no one ever died or even got seriously hurt. It spring-boarded the career of Mr. T and prolonged the career of the indelible George Peppard.

The gist of the show was the “A-Team” were wrongly accused of a crime they didn’t commit, so while on the run from authorities, these four ex-United States Army Special Forces helped those in need by constructing state of the art machinery out of spare parts in a short montage spliced to their theme song. Basically, they were mercenaries with a heart.

The show is not in the Land of Punt. It was fairly ridiculous and highly predictable although it did have a certain charm. Despite what you may think, the cast did a great job—a movie with the four originals would have been an absolutely brilliant idea… 20 years ago. If the show had lived nowadays it would make an excellent addition to the USA Network, maybe on after Burn Notice or In Plain Sight.
