MTV Movie Awards: Why, Lord? Why?

The only thing more ridiculous then an industry giving out awards to itself is MTV handing out awards—in particular the MTV Movie Awards which held Saturday night.

Neither MTV or their awards shows are in the Land of Punt.

If you watched the MTV Movie awards, you're young. If you didn't, you're old.

If you watched the MTV Movie awards, you're young. If you didn't, you're old and/or literate.

The MTV Movie Awards are more manufactured than Miley Cyrus’ career. What does it matter what MTV thinks about movies? Why not the TBS SuperStation Movie Awards? The Oxygen Movie Awards? The CNN Headlines Movie Awards? The HGTV Movie Awards?

The incident that had “everyone talking the next day” (don’t you just despise that saying) was English comedian Sacha Baron Cohen landing on rapper Eminem.

By international law, the aforementioned performers must be introduced, respectively, as “English comedian” and “rapper.”

Those involved with the show announced Monday that the event was indeed rehearsed. They had to announce it was planned? If you thought that stunt was extemporaneous you might want to take a good long look at your future and it better involve community college.

This year’s award show gave Ben Stiller something called the “Generation Award.” This award is given to someone “who has captured the attention of the MTV audience throughout their career.”

If that doesn’t send Stiller into a mid-life crisis nothing will.

Wouldn’t you be devastated if your body of work consistently appealed to MTV watchers?

In fact, Land of Punt is shocked MTV would give out an award that is akin to lifetime achievement award. After all, this is a network that didn’t celebrate its 25th anniversary because it didn’t want to appear old.

Below is a full list of winners at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. LOP doesn’t want to tell anyone what to do but judging from these winner, the MTV Movie Awards might want to watch an independent film every once in awhile.
